Writing practices, socialisation and subject cultures: Visual culture pedagogies

Abstract
The social and historical construction of Visual Culture is entangled in a false theory/practice binary that presents writing as cerebral and formulaic. Through this construction, writing is often conflated with an essay assessment and a transmission model of knowledge in a lecture theatre space. Although the writing/making myth has already been debunked ‘in theory’, there is residue of it in Art School curricula. This paper explores ways to move beyond binaries and to reframe Visual Culture by locating writing as a transdisciplinary material practice. Along the way, I ask: What might subversive pedagogies for writing look like? How can Art School staff draw on artists’ pedagogies to help students to explore mess, risk and ‘not knowing’ in writing practices?
