Abstract

Dow has demonstrated the significance of methodology for delineating schools of thought in macroeconomics. One methodological distinction relates to the perceived importance of uncertainty, especially for the economic theorist. Placing uncertainty centre-stage herself, as a post-Keynesian, Dow has returned repeatedly to issues such as the role of judgement in theorising, the norms of inquiry and the merits of pluralism. These contributions resonate with discussions within the philosophical tradition of pragmatism, and yet Dow does not draw heavily on this link. This chapter asks why and makes a case for positioning Dow’s work more explicitly within this tradition.
