Additional Information | Additional Information : The paper is the result of co-research between University of Milan and UWE. The paper discusses alternative methods for image enhancement and colour printing based on unsupervised colour enhancement methods. The work explored spatial image enhancement: Retinex, RSR, ACE and compares global methods such as tools used in Photoshop: Histogram Equalisation and Auto Levels. The project demonstrates the beginnings of a cross-disciplinary approach, presented in the aims and objectives of the pan-European research network CREATE - Colour Research for European Advanced Technology Employment: to develop a pan-European network of research projects that brings together 8 European colour groups to exchange and disseminate knowledge through a programme of seven specialist events over four years (2007-2010); to bring together experts in industry and institutes so as to promote mutual benefit to promote multi-disciplinarity and economic robustness; and to facilitate teaching and learning for a generation of new researchers in the colour sciences and the arts to maintain targeted economic growth in Europe. It responds to Sir George Cox's HM treasury report 2005; and addresses the Lisbon Summit agenda 2000. UWE is the main coordinator and Parraman is the fund-holder and project manager. The other contractors are: Universita Degli Studi Di Milano, Italy; Gjovik University College, Norway; University of Leeds; University of Ulster at Belfast; Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain; Universite de Reims Champagne-Ardenne, France; Pannon University (formerly University of Veszprem), Hungary. The research is a continuation from an earlier paper by Parraman: Searching User Preferences in Printing: a proposal for an automatic solution', The International Conference Printing Technology SPb'06, 26 30 June 2006, St Petersburg, Russia. Parraman was invited to present research to Ricoh in USA and has attracted further research opportunities from John McCann Imaging USA, with a view to the creation of a new European network in film restoration.
