Making the uncomfortable comfortable - Changing culture to ensure inclusion in science
Adukwu, Emmanuel
Authors
Abstract
Globally, science remains exclusive and inequalities continue for minoritized communities in the UK, US and across the world. Access to learning resources, quality of learning experiences and graduate outcomes continues to impact minoritized staff and students negatively. Although strides have been made to address equality, diversity and inclusion through initiates such as Stonewall, Athena Swan and the Race equality charter marks, these initiatives are often slow because the culture of higher education remains exclusive.
To actively address the issue of exclusion, bias and impact of racism and discrimination, the uncomfortable conversations for a was created. This session will highlight the importance of going beyond the strategy and plans to address EDI issues in Higher Education. It will also provide attendees with tips on how to deal with difficult conversations of race, bias and discrimination.
