Abstract
During a brief historical moment, April 15-26, 1959, Fidel Castro and a delgation of more than fifty industrial and international representatives visited the United States as guests of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. The 32-year-old Cuban revolutionary, in rumpled fatigues and unkempt beard, was extolled by many U.S. citizens as a genuine hero. This article suggests that this postive presentation was largely created and perpetuated by mainstream media accounts from newspapers such as the New York Times that lent credence to Castro's image as a charismatic Iberian conqueror.
