Abstract

In reference to one of the first ground-breaking exhibitions in the 1970s about the then still new medium of artists’ books—"Book as Artwork 1960/72”, held in 1972 at Nigel Greenwood Inc. in London and curated by Italian critic Germano Celant with gallery assistant Lynda Morris—the project presents the equal number of 259 artists’ books. Now exclusively focusing on the voided and illegible contents, the exhibition curated by Moritz Küng includes books by some 180 artists and collectives from 30 countries (Western and Eastern Europe, South and North America, Asia).
The book work “Is it a game, or is it for real?” by Paul Laidler will be item no. 255 in the section “Utopia in Utopia“, one of 15 chapters in the exhibition.
The exhibition includes artist book works by Christian Boltanski, Marcel Broodthaers, Jeremy Deller, Olafur Eliasson, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Martin Kippenberger, Joseph Kosuth, Sol LeWitt, Richard Long , Bruce Nauman, Dieter Roth and Ed Ruscha to name but a few.
