Abstract

An original work for string quartet in three movements, premiered at the University Concert Hall, Cardiff on 2nd March 2010 by the internationally renowned Carducci Quartet.
Inspired by the sights and sounds of Spain, the first movement, Cante Jondo (from the heart, deep, intimate), is inspired by flamenco music for voice and guitar; mesmeric high, soaring vocal improvisations (cante) and hand clapping rhythms (palmas) increasingly interjected by intense and emotive jaleo from the audience. The second movement, Midnight Ballad, evokes a late evening atmosphere, with everyday sounds interspersed by a solitary bird call. The third movement, El Habañero represents both Spanish cooking (el habañero, ‘capsicum chinense jacqui’ - one of the hottest chilli peppers in the world) and a holiday atmosphere, in particular the local Habañero tourist train.
