For massed harps (or 3 harps) with optional lever harp(s). Commissioned by the National Youth Harp Orchestra and first performed at the Menuhin Hall, 17 March 2024.
Emerald Waltz is a tribute to Ireland, its beauty, character and culture, and is inspired by elements of traditional Irish folk music, such as the typical AABB structure. Lyrical melodic phrases with a broadly Aeolian tonality are shared amongst the harp parts, and juxtaposed by interchanging harp tunings of Bb/B and F#/F. The music showcases the collective atmospheric warmth of massed harps, featuring an antiphonal surround sound combined with delicate solos scattered amongst the harp ensemble, and the lively closing section draws elements together with rhythmic flourishes in a joyful celebration.
