Flesh/Films: Mainstream movies, embodiment and sexuality

Abstract

After outlining the four most dominant modes through which film studies examines sex in the movies (sexual stereotyping, psychoanalysis and issues of unconscious desire, the performance of normativity, and developments in censorship), the lecture offered a new way based on the philosophy of phenomenology. Rather than codes of representation the emphasis here was on how cinema offers ambiguous and multiple modes of expression, which connect less with a an excluding notion of sexual identity and more with an existential and intersubjective understanding or identification with the sexual as a reflection of wider modes of embodied and perceptual being.
