Abstract
Persecution from the secular world and ostracism exercised by established church authorities, alongside the emphasis on saving souls rather than changing socio-economic and political structures, ensured that for much of its history the Pentecostal movement was apolitical. However in recent years this has began to change. This chapter considers Pentecostal political involvement in Brazil in all of its vast diversity from grass-root levels to national politics. Here, Pentecostalism shows its important flexibility in producing political activity that is not only right wing but also leftish orientations which makes it arduous to make generalizations and predict the future of its role as Brazil emerges as a democracy and emerging economic power.
