Cognitive psychology studies of visual search typically use
novice searchers (often undergraduate students). Such studies have provided valuable insight into visual search performance, but how might expert searchers differ in their performance? Radiologists typically have years of experience searching medical radiographs for abnormalities, but research in radiology shows they still fall victim to many of the same types of errors as novice searchers. We explore
how radiologists perform on a basic multiple-target visual search
task and compare their performance to novice searchers to determine
how search expertise affects performance and strategy.
