Abstract

A reproduction of Sowden's original book (2003) from the series of artists' books produced in homage to Ed Ruscha, Fortynine Coach Seats presents each of the 'stages' from a series of performances enacted on a coach travelling between Bristol and London. Each time Sowden performed, he recorded the coach he was on, the time and date, the other number of passengers (the audience), exactly where he sat and most importantly a photograph of the seat that he had occupied. Cut from their surroundings and with no explanation, the seats took on their own characters. Presented in chronological order there are forty nine as this was the standard number of seats on a National Express coach driving between Bristol and London at the time.
