The whole world a creativity kit

Abstract

This paper revisits code-based computing practices in art and design education. The case often made for such practices is that they allow non-experts to shape what surrounds them, leading to a greater sense of emotional involvement, empowerment and creative ownership. This must be radicalized further. The maker’s mindset can take students beyond the status quo of cultural consumption, and its unethical resourcing and manufacturing. The paper argues that by cultivating resourcefulness and making more with less, art and design education will become more resilient, sustainable and creative.
