Abstract

Paul Laidler will talk about the development of a digital print publishing practice entitled CFPR Editions (www.cfpreditions.co.uk) and the recent exhibition that he curated entitled "just press print". This title was chosen to highlight that although digital printing has a 'print' button, the significant elements for the creation of the digital print are often overlooked: the relationship and conversation between artist and publisher/ master printer, the iterations that are necessary to achieve the final print, the need for archiving and recording the process. The talk will also touch upon the evolving nature of digital technology and its potential influence upon established definitions and practices within the field of printmaking.

Paul is a Research Fellow specialising in the field of digital printmaking at the Centre for Fine Print Research, UWE Bristol. The main focus of Paul's academic activities stem from the close relationships that exist between technology, ideas and making in the visual arts - particularly in the area of digitally-mediated print and its many offshoots.
Paul's area of expertise at the CFPR is rooted in the collaborative print studio model and the realisation of fine art print editions and multiples for artists. More specifically Paul’s PhD investigated the holistic nature of facilitating the production of digitally mediated prints - as a means to consider the impact of digital technology upon the mechanically defined role of the master printer (that has contributed to defining expectations, functioning, production, publication, output and artisanship of the collaborative print studio).
