Abstract

In 2015, the IMIA-NISIG Student Working group developed and distributed an international survey on current and future trends in nursing informatics, focused on the perspectives of nurse informaticians. The survey was translated into six languages and distributed through professional groups and other relevant networks and 272 survey participants responded to the open ended question regarding recommendations on the advancement of nursing informatics. A thematic qualitative analysis of survey responses identified five key areas for action: research, practice, education, collaboration, and visibility. We suggest how components of various competency lists might support the key areas for action. We also identify room for further development of existing competency guidelines to support in-service education for practicing nurses; to promote nursing informatics visibility or ability to collaborate and integrate with other professions.
