113 artworks from 91 artists working across the world and using the whole range of print media, the quality of the diverse and vibrant entries for the neo:printprize2016 really impressed the distinguished judges who were:
Nancy Campbell – Artist/Writer, Editor of ‘Printmaking Today’
Rachel Gladfelter – Director, Pace Prints New York
Gill Saunders – Senior Curator, Victoria & Albert Museum
Jo Stockham – Artist, Professor and Head of the Print Programme, Royal College of Art.
Speaking of her experience as a judge Gill said.
‘As always with such competitions, making a selection from online submissions was a challenge, but also a tantalising voyage of discovery. I was pleased to find plenty of subtle thought-provoking works demonstrating ambition and skill. I was also encouraged to see such a diversity of print processes amongst the submissions, with many artists mixing methods and materials in inventive and original ways, and many challenging conventional definitions of ‘print’. All in all, a valuable insight into the state of printmaking today.’
The independent jury, who also award the main prizes, select works anonymously from an open submission. This year’s prizes weregenerously donated by thefollowing sponsors: The University of Bolton, GreatArt, Jackson’s Art Supplies, Intaglio Printmaker, John Purcell Paper, Screenstretch and Hawthorn Printmaker Supplies. The Market Place and Bolton Council are also major sponsors of the neo:printprize2016.
The neo:printprize is part of a series of high profile international opens facilitated by Bolton based neo:studios, a not-for-profit artist-led organisation founded in 2007. The success of previous prizes together with the introduction of a 12 week residency offered to new graduates ensures that the quality of submissions continues to rise. The prize is an international, open exhibition aiming to raise awareness of new trends and directions in contemporary printmaking, to provide a platform for artists, showcase excellence and innovation from contemporary printmakers, and bring to Bolton the best contemporary art from around the world.
