In 2015, the UN adopted the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR 2015-2030) with the goal of reducing disaster risks and the consequent loss of life and livelihoods. As part of this goal, the UNISDR produced the framework ‘Ten Essentials for Making Cities Resilient’ to facilitate cities to evaluate their resiliency levels in relation to the Sendai Framework. The “Ten E’s” serve as simple target for best DRR practice, particularly enabling cities to plan, mitigate, respond, recover and adapt to disasters. Simultaneously, the World Health Organisation adopts the ‘Healthy Cities’ (HC) programme to promote “how the built environment… affects the health of our citizens and the importance of integrating health and sustainable development considerations in how we plan, design, maintain, improve and manage our cities and neighbourhoods”. Despite the similarities in the goals and aspirations between DRR and HC there is scant detailed integration of the two strategies. There is a need for further research aimed at integrating and harmonizing HC and DRR to promote healthier, greener and more resilient cities, and urban areas.
