Abstract

Professor Stephen Hoskins was an invited speaker on Crafts in the Digital Age at HomoFaber Conference presented by the Michelangelo Foundation, Venice in collaboration with Institut National des Métiers d'Art INMA, 29th September 2018.

The Crafts in the digital Age round table addressed the perspectives offered by new technologies in crafts: how does it impact crafts people’s thinking and technical process, as well as the link between the hand and the material.

The talk briefly covered the history of 3D printing from its invention in 1976 by Charles Hull, including some of its historical precedents, such Benjamin Chaverton from the middle of the 19th Century and François Willeme who was an early exponent of photo-sculpture. Disruptive new technologies have been a constant occurrence throughout the development of Man the Maker (Homo Faber). Our perspective of how disruptive they are is coloured by our view of history. The talk gave examples of why there is a growing craft of the digital.
