Abstract

The research examines innovative approaches to designing new urban areas and retrofitting existing cities to enable healthier outcomes. The design and layout of the built environment is a significant determinant of human health. Simultaneously, achieving healthier outcomes in a human population can also aid in the delivery of sustainable development goals. Using an innovative ‘design-research’ approach, alternative city designs can be used to forecast likely health and sustainability criteria outcomes over a twenty year time period. The research contributes to the evidence-base for promoting better health and sustainable lifestyles through the design of the built environment.
