Point prevalence study determining the inpatient rate of carbapenemase-producing organisms at a large NHS trust in the UK

Abstract
A point prevalence study (PPS) to determine the carriage rate of carbapenemase producing organisms (CPOs) was performed across 4 sites at Barts Health NHS Trust (BHT), encompassing 2.5 million patients across three London boroughs: Tower Hamlets, Newham and Waltham Forest.
Renal patients were found to be at higher risk of acquisition of a CPO compared to other specialities, possibly caused by the presence of indwelling devices.
The prevalence of CPOs across all sites of BHT demonstrates NDM to be the most frequently detected, followed by OXA-48-like carbapenemases. This PPS allowed us to determine the risk of carriage within our own patient population and subsequently implement a screening protocol based upon these findings.
