Abstract
Transport, by definition, involves movement; and different methods of movement require different levels of physical activity on the part of the traveller. The intensity of activity may also vary, for example depending on the speed of cycling. A useful definition of ‘physically active transport’ would be one where some outcome from the physically active nature of the transport is manifest. We introduce issues connected with travel decision making behaviour. We follow this with a review of cultural issues which imbues transport, and also note trends in transport behaviour which are currently emerging in developed economies. We go on to explore the relationship between transport, health and the environment and then consider the nature of evidence and contentions around evidenced based policy. Finally, we draw the chapter together to provide an holistic understanding of transport and health.
