Abstract
Would the debate around social media and our privacy look different if we were asked to respond to a business model that did not promise us ‘convenience’ for free? Research demonstrates the importance we place on our personal data, but we continue to surrender this information to platforms in return for easy access to their communication tools (and algorithms). In this interactive lecture, we explore the value that we, in our social groups and as individuals, place on our privacy and ask how this is affected by different economic relationships.
Attendees are invited to participate in an alternative future where personal data has been reclassified as a tradable commodity and they are able to set the price of their own privacy to interested buyers. We look at the ways our data can be used and ask if it is the renowned ‘tech villains’, or the seemingly benevolent, that we should be worrying about the most.
