Abstract
A collection of three main papers (abstracted separately) and eight workshop reports devoted to different areas of practice: planning, housing, personal social services, education, inner city, health services, state workers, local economic policy. They explored the usefulness of the concept of the local state as applied to these themes and enquired into how far the understanding of issues in these areas required that the concept of the local state be reformulated or abandoned.-after Editor
