Abstract

This chapter:

• Provides an introduction to the long term engagement of local communities with BGI, and gives an overview of recent relevant literature
• Lists the main stakeholders for WSUD, and discusses different ways to conceptualise communities
• Draws on the experience of recent studies discussing the notion of Amenity Value, and highlights its key importance for public perception of BGI in the long term
• Addresses consideration of Biodiversity, and considers its potential to complement amenity
• Reviews recent studies related to public preferences of BGI
• Uses case studies from Portland (USA) and Newcastle (UK) to illustrate the issues related to public awareness and understanding based on their experience of established installations
• Addresses the potential of involving the public in maintenance through perceived co-ownership of BGI components
• Provides recommendations and concluding remarks, summarising the most important considerations for practitioners and for further research
