Abstract

For some time, segments of the British press have emblazoned into the public consciousness that ‘fact’ that being excluded from school and attending a PRU or AP is an inevitable precursor to a life of crime and, eventually, prison. The catchphrase “PRU-to-prison-pipeline” is well known. Many people would be forgiven for expecting that all children and young people attending APs were committing violent crimes, or that being permanently excluded is an inevitable precursor of persistent offending.

Whilst there is evidence that PRUs and APs cater for a growing population of young people with experience of the youth justice system, this area of education (and the practices and work within it) has long been left to languish beyond the public consciousness and lost within the research wilderness.

This event in the Watershed Bristol, brings together school leaders, teachers and academics from Bristol and across the southwest to discuss current data. myths and concerns and, crucially, some of the flexible and innovative practices being undertaken within APs.
