Urban risk analysis traditionally relies on 2D maps and models, which, while effective for static risk mapping, lack the ability to realistically simulate dynamic emergency scenarios. The investigation presented in this chapter explores the integration of Virtual Reality (VR) environments with real-world data to simulate disaster scenarios in urban areas. Specifically, this work focuses on earthquake scenarios, leveraging seismic vulnerability assessments and damage scenarios to create immersive VR environments. A digital model of the historic city centre of Coimbra, Portugal, was used as the basis for developing an immersive VR environment, which was then evaluated in terms of usability and effectiveness for disaster preparedness. Results from user testing demonstrated significant correlations between the model's usability and task performance metrics, highlighting the potential of such tools in enhancing disaster response strategies. This research contributes to the book's theme, 'Applications of Immersive Technology in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction,' through the development of new VR-based tools that provide stakeholders with more effective resources for fostering community resilience. Ultimately, the overarching goal of this research project was to demonstrate that by embracing innovative technologies like VR, society can be better equipped to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.
