Abstract

IFLA EUROPE NED_NET GROUP

The IFLA Europe Med_net Group unites countries that either border the Mediterranean or share similar climatic and environmental conditions. While primarily composed of members from the IFLA European Region, the group also includes representatives from other IFLA regions, such as IFLA Africa and IFLA Middle East, with participation from countries including Tunisia, Morocco, Lebanon, and Egypt.

THE TALK

As part of a broader strategy, landscape architecture, traditionally sidelined and limited to aesthetic considerations, should be recognised as a vital discipline for addressing Egypt's complex environmental and social challenges. Landscape architects are uniquely positioned to work at the intersection of natural and cultural ecosystems and the built environment. Owing to the field’s inherently multidisciplinary character, they are capable of blending aesthetic sensibilities with scientific analysis to design and plan landscapes that improve environmental quality and promote public health across varying scales. Moreover, their capacity to lead and collaborate across sectors enables landscape architects to play a pivotal role in climate change adaptation and socioeconomic development, ultimately supporting the creation of resilient and equitable communities.
This talk explores climate risks at national, regional, and local levels, emphasizing Egypt’s current vulnerabilities in the absence of landscape architects’ integrated participation. It reviews the state of the landscape architecture profession in Egypt and highlights the existing gaps and overlooked opportunities in recognizing its potential contributions to climate adaptation and sustainable development. Situated at the crossroads of planning, policy, and implementation, landscape architecture has the potential to be a transformative force in fostering climate-resilient communities and sustainable landscapes throughout Egypt.
