Abstract

Aimed at practicing psychotherapists, psychotherapy students, and other relevant professional groups in psychosocial fields, this book serves as a guide into research within one's own practice and explores the importance and methods involved. It introduces the concept of the practitioner as a researcher and key areas covered include the purpose and importance of practitioner research, addressing barriers that hinder practitioners from seeing themselves as researchers, and exploring different types of research, notably the distinction between 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-person research, which is highlighted as a crucial tool for a necessary mental shift for practitioners. The book provides guidance on various data collection methods applicable to practitioner research. It also outlines different data analysis strategies, including inductive, deductive, and abductive approaches, emphasizing analytical transparency. Significant attention is given to ethical considerations, delving into challenges and responsibilities practitioners face, especially when involving clients, and stressing the importance of informed consent and handling potential dual roles. The book discusses Action Research and the use of "trial actions" as a cyclical process for implementing and evaluating changes. Approaches like Phenomenology, focusing on understanding lived experience through methods like bracketing and descriptive language, and Autoethnography, using personal experience to understand broader phenomena, are also explored as relevant methodologies, and the value of combining qualitative and quantitative methods in Mixed Methods Research is discussed. The book emphasizes the importance of genre awareness for reporting practitioner research, requiring methodological trustworthiness and analytical transparency.
