Abstract

Installation of 200+ paintings, prints and drawings, plus a five minute animated film in a cycle of one-man and group exhibitions. The artwork originated from a programme of studio work and visits that investigated art production and the construct of the artist as studio-bound 'tortured genius'. The one-year research project used a fictional construct of art assistants in order to question established norms within the history of studio-based art practice. Resulting works took the form of a semi-fictionalized installation of a studio, measuring 4 x 3.5 x 3.5 metres, which was shown in a number of guises initially in Tilburg, and then at the Kunstverein Hildesheim, Germany. A double 'studio' was created for the EV+A show in Limerick, Eire, and for the Galerie Schuster in Frankfurt, Germany. The installation at EV+A was selected from over 400 submitting artists by the curator Virginia Perez Ratton.

Two catalogues accompanied the exhibition cycle: Die Bildermacher, texts by Mark Stafford and Anja Musiat, published by Galerie Schuster, Frankfurt and Berlin, Germany, May 2002; Fictionlands, text by Klaus Dierssen, published by Kunstverein Hildesheim, Hildesheim ISBN 3-935729-09-X March 2003

The exhibition cycle was reviewed by: Mark Ewart, 'Crawford Open 2' SSI magazine, July/August. 2002; Philipp Meier, 'Referenzen und Reverenzen' Neue Zurcher Zeitung, 3 February 2003; Aidan Dunne 'Opening Irish Gallery Doors' Irish Times, 15 March 2003.
