Abstract

This paper explores the challenges faced by international students in UK higher education, with a particular focus on the transition from IELTS preparation to university-level academic work. Drawing on qualitative data from postgraduate students at UWE Bristol, the study highlights significant differences between IELTS and university writing tasks, including genre, length, time constraints, style, and content. The research identifies key challenges such as adapting to new academic expectations, managing time, and overcoming language barriers. The findings suggest that while pre-sessional courses and good communication with lecturers support students' learning experiences, additional pastoral support is crucial for addressing non-academic challenges. The paper concludes with recommendations for better preparing international students for the demands of university life and study in an English-speaking environment.
