Abstract

This presentation centres on a project titled ‘The Rubbish Tip Archive’ which considers the past and future lives of matter, waste and contested values of extracted materials within the post-human world.

The project uses a range of experimental processes including camera-less prints from negatives made using dust from waste sorting plants around Bristol, UK, and slow pin-hole exposures of the same location. By following abject, unvalued materials with intention and investigating through slow and embodied approaches, the works invite speculation as to what it is to know and be certain of materials and our own relationships to them.

The landfill heap is a sealed space, the mechanisms of industrial waste processing are monetarised and cycles of waste colonisation damage peoples and ecologies; following to understand discarded materials to develop approaches offering care and hope to living with future matter and materials.

This work represents an ongoing series of works using matter and materials, including waste dust and landfill leachates, as catalysts to explore geological, social psychological, environmental and political aspects through alternative photography processes, moving image and sound.
