National survey of GUM services on Disclosure of sexual violence In Sexual Health (DISH)

Abstract

Healthcare and sexual health have a central role to play in the prevention of Gender Based Violence or Violence Against Women and Girls, particularly on the identification of sexual and domestic violence/abuse. Healthcare should be able to identify survivors, provide first line support, refer to specialist services and link to comprehensive post assault care.  For this to work, survivors of sexual violence and abuse need higher priority within healthcare practice and policy. In the first study of its kind, with the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) and their Sexual Violence Specialist Interest Group (SVSIG) we provide a snapshot survey of current comparative sexual and domestic violence/abuse enquiry practice in Genito Urinary Medicine services across the UK. 62 responding services evidenced variable practice around asking, collating data, referral, training and staff supervision. These results benchmark practice and points to how we can improve the crucial role of sexual health in reducing the harm of undisclosed and therefore untreated trauma.
