Abstract
This chapter explores the practical possibility of Art and Design education as means to activate pupils’ agency on the issues of social equity. Against a background of increasing global connectivity and popular youth movements centred on the issues of environmental, economic, and social justice, many educators, student teachers, and school pupils seemingly express associated interest in the ethical case for a critical Art and Design education. In response, concrete, practical actions are discussed here – inspired by both educational theorists and artistic practices – through which socially conscious teachers can embrace the potentially critical lens of Art and Design. This chapter offers demonstration of how through art, pupils might be empowered to critique, question, or even transgress educational convention in search of a better world.
