Beyond the beautiful game

Abstract
Football has always been rooted in working-class culture and celebrated within working-class communities. Criticism of today’s game typically focuses on the capitalisation of some leagues, and football’s growing distance from its own roots. Yet, it remains important to working-class communities like my own. This article examines the opportunities for collective class solidarity and identity, and acts as a reminder how social class can shape pathways within and beyond the beautiful game.
