Abstract

Photography exhibition, with the theme COLLECTIVE HOUSE, included in the programming of the Arroios Photography Festival (from August 30th to September 15th) and in the Algarve Photography Festival (from October 21st to November 25th)
The image is a double-page spread from the book WIDE LOAD [BRED LAST] A House Moved, ISBN: 978-1-7391803-1-7, published by msdm publications. It belongs to chapter 2 titled: 'The Move: Teg to Degernäs, 10 Km.'

It situates a whole-house structural move on a truck, against the backdrop of an Ikea Store in Northern Sweden with the small text advert for the store 'Finally We are Moving Out' and comments on the particular gentrification process occurring in the region of displaced historic buildings from the city centre.

The book is a photographic and textual record of a house move in northern Sweden. It considers the historical, cultural, technical, and material significance of complete house relocations (husflyttningar) in the region, focusing on the historical relocation of a house in Umeå in 2021. It investigates the vernacular mobility of constructed and occupied forms in relation to a historical and future context of urban reconfiguration, proposing an architecture of downsizing in northern Sweden.

Chapter 2 considers the space beneath the house as a conceptual and physical extension of space. Its focus is on the elevation and repositioning on a low carrier during the summer solstice on June 21, 2021, and the subsequent journey through and out of the city of Umeå to Degernäs. It documents the process carried out by Magnus Martensson and his assistant Erik from Nya Töre Husflyttningar, including their considerations of structural and load knowledge over time, understood as a combination of physical knowledge and craftsmanship. The move, which lasted for six hours overnight, took place on the longest day of the year in a northern geographic region with the sun close to midnight.

The first iteration of the project is a limited edition hardcover artist's book on wheels, which was exhibited at the Symposium and Exhibition 'Relate North 10: Possible Futures' at Yukon University (Yukon School of Visual Arts) Arctic Sustainable Art and Design Thematic Network (ASAD) and the University of Lapland on January 27th and 28th, 2023.
