Abstract
1: Background
Chronic cancer-related pain (CRP) is frequently reported, yet poorly understood. It is essential healthcare professionals have knowledge and skills to support those impacted with chronic and late effect CRP. However, literature shows that healthcare professionals have poor knowledge and low confidence.
2: Methods.
The UKONS LWBC MIG hosted a free educational webinar on managing chronic and late effect CRP. It aimed to highlight the complexity of chronic and late effect CRP with practical insights into how nurses can support those affected through holistic assessment and management techniques.
3: Results
In total, 312 delegates registered and 122 attended the live webinar.
At the beginning of the webinar 75 attendees stated their confidence level regarding CRP: 24% were not confident (n-18), 54.6% (n-41) were somewhat confident, 17.3% (n-13) were confident and three (4%) were very confident. When polled at the end of the webinar, 69 ranked their confidence levels: zero were not confident, 30.4% (n-21) were somewhat, 59.4% (n-41) were confident and seven (10.1%) were very confident.
Immediately after the webinar, 28 attendees completed an evaluation and almost all (96.5%, n-27) felt they gained new knowledge relevant to their role and planned to apply their learning to practice.
One month after the webinar, 15 attendees completed a follow up survey. All agreed they had been able to use what they had learned in their clinical practice. All said they would like to learn more about chronic and late effect CRP.
4: Conclusion
Webinars can be a useful way to learn about CPR. A short interactive educational intervention can impact on healthcare professionals’ confidence levels regarding CRP. However, more resources are needed to improve healthcare professionals’ knowledge and confidence of chronic pain as a late effect of cancer.
