Design development of side road crossings for pedestrians and cyclists: Final Report v2.1

Abstract

The Road Safety Trust awarded the Centre for Transport and Society at the University of the West of England, Bristol a grant to undertake research relating to the provision of Marked Priority for people walking and cycling across the side road at give way junctions.

Data collected included observations of interactions to determine the yielding behaviour, an analysis of the collision record, and focus groups to understand attitudes and behaviours of road users.
From a consideration the yielding behaviour, Marked Priority crossings with a zebra crossing (i.e. a parallel crossing) would be the preferred enhancement, followed by Design Priority crossings (also known as continuous footways), and finally Marked Priority crossings without a zebra crossing (i.e. only a priority cycle track crossing).

There may be contexts where Design Priority is preferable to Marked Priority, and/or where parallel crossings are not possible
