Abstract

The original shorter paper was given as an invited talk at the SAB '04 workshop on Swarm Robotics. Selected papers were invited to be extended and following further full review were published in this volume in the highly-regarded 'state of the art review' series of LNCS.

The paper sets out a roadmap for 'Swarm Engineering', a disciplined and rigorous methodology for engineering complex distributed systems based on the swarm intelligence paradigm into which one could place a high degree of reliance for e.g. safety-critical systems.

This paper led directly to invitations for [1] the author to attend and speak at the EPFL Summer Research Institute (2005); [2] to co-organise the 2006 SAB Swarm Robotics Workshop resulting in LNCS Volume 4433 and [3] to join the IARP working group on Dependable Robots in Human Environments(2007).
