Additional Information Additional Information : Ionic Polymer Metal Composites (IPMC) are dual purpose flexible materials capable of converting electrical energy to mechanical force for actuation or converting mechanical movement to electrical signal for sensing the force and/or displacement. It is possible to design an individual IPMC sensor or actuator using a model based method developed in an EC funded ISAMCO project. The paper presents a methodology to design integrated IPMC sensor-actuator devices to realise force/displacement feedback within the actuator. Two IPMC strips are used, one to provide the actuator and the second for the sensing. The simplified single IPMC device design methodology is extended here to allow two IPMC devices to be incorporated in a single unit. In this way it is hoped that multiple IMPC strip devices can be designed for more sophisticated integrated sensor-actuator systems.
