Abstract

These four blogs/working papers constitute one of the outputs from a research project that explores the ways in which Channel 4's relocation out of London in 2017-18 constitues a significant event for the brodcaster - the 'largest shake-up in its history' - and for the UK's media ecology as a whole. The blogs provide the context for relocation - the obligations that public service broadcasters have to serve the UK's nations and regions as well as London. They then examine various facets of the relocation, dicussing the reasons for the move, which had political as well as cultural and economic drivers, in its historical context; and its the impact on each of the three host cities - Bristol, Glasgow and Leeds - with greater detail on Bristol. The blogs also examine the government's mantra of 'levelling up' and the peristent threat of privatisation that dogged the move alongside the constructions enforced by the COVID-19 pandemic. The final blog also details a public-facing event, 'Channet 4 at 40: the TV Revolution in Bristol' (3 December 2022) and summarises the future outlook for the broadcaster.
