Abstract

This paper looked at teaching documentary production as an integrated process of practice, theory and pedagogy.
It attempted to outline an established but necessarily flexible methodology for teaching documentary production that encompasses purpose and motivation, genre, production research, production processes, narrative and ethics, which has proved to be a very practical and successful teaching model, not just in terms of producing good films, but also in challenging student film makers to a process that can provide a deep and often transformative learning experience.
