Abstract

A showcase exhibition of the practical outputs of a three year research fellowship funded by the AHRC. Jessica Turrell has developed an experimental approach to enamel by which she seeks to create work that moves away from traditional jewellery enamel practice in order to achieve a more ambiguous and expressive material quality. In the series of pieces made for ‘Inner Voice’ she has used etching techniques to create layers of barely legible handwritten text and repeated marks that reference handwriting practice. These etched pieces are often made up of multiple layers with overlays of monochrome mark or text uppermost allowing for glimpses of underlying enamel in bright jewel-like colours. By being partially concealed the underlying colour is imbued with a precious quality and a rarity that it might not otherwise have if more boldly displayed.

The text used in the medal series comments on some of the desires and motivations of the jewellery wearer implicit in their choice of jewel; for example the desire to be noticed, to be admired or to belong. Within her work Jessica strives to achieve a tactile delicacy whilst making pieces that reward the wearers close attention with an intricate and detailed surface.
