Abstract

This focus group study was commissioned by the English Subject Centre of the Higher Education Academy. Its purpose was to enrich both the Subject Centre’s and the discipline community’s understanding of the ways in which students are currently experiencing English programmes at undergraduate level. The researcher ran ten focus groups of undergraduate English students in six urban universities, including both pre-92 and post-92 institutions. The themes selected for discussion included The Experience of Male Students, Reading Habits, Assessment and Feedback, and Progression. The accounts of the focus groups presented below are followedby analyses of the implications for each of the four themesof the study. The final section offers summary comment andrecommendations. It is hoped that the words of the students, asreported and discussed below, will assist colleagues to develop university English in ways that will enhance the experience of tutors and students alike.
