Abstract

During the coming decades greater pressure will be placed on the spatial planning system as it is increasingly challenged to make space for, and interact with, water management issues. The sheer complexity of issues and the increasing technical knowledge required means partnership working between planners and hydrologists is essential to achieve a sustainable, integrated approach. Yet there can be a considerable misunderstanding between these disciplines that can hinder progress, often concerning the organisational and cultural context in which various parties operate. In January 2010 the BHS held an interdisciplinary national meeting between hydrologists and planners. This paper reports on the development of communication, understanding and knowledge transfer in order to facilitate workable solutions to the challenges we face.
