Abstract
During the research and development of Controlled Autoignition (CAI) combustion in
gasoline engines, the hybrid CAI and spark ignition (SI) combustion has been observed in certain
operating conditions. In this paper, the characteristics of the SI-CAI hybrid combustion in a 4-stroke
gasoline engine are presented. The effects of spark ignition, residual gas concentration, and effective
compression ratio on the partition of autoignition combustion and flame propagation are analyzed.
Based on these experimental observations, a heat release model is formulated for the SI-CAI hybrid
combustion and verified to be suitable for computer aided engine design applications. Finally, it is
shown how the hybrid combustion can be manipulated to produce optimized combustion mode
switching operation in the 4-stroke gasoline engine.
