Abstract

As an institution with a clear policy to embrace the benefits of e-learning techniques and technology the School of Creative Arts (SCA), a faculty of The University of the West of England faces the challenge of persuading practitioners of studio based pedagogies to adopt computer mediated techniques. One of the subject disciplines that appeared to be particularly resistant to the adoption of online technology was that of Multi-Disciplinary printmaking which was at odds with the high levels of technical and computer skills demanded by some practices. A research intervention using innovative techniques was used to encourage the engagement of the teaching staff and students in online environments. The study concludes that the resistance of this subject discipline to the adoption of online pedagogy was illusory; a re-framing of the nature of online environments was effective in persuading both tutors and students to enhance their studio discourses with web based communication.
