Abstract

This paper explores the business case for ‘redistributed manufacturing’ (RDM) in deployed medical care. Employing an established approach, value stream mapping (VSM), we examine a manufacturing case from four priority areas: additive layer
manufacturing, cell and tissue therapies, clinical fluids, and pharmaceuticals. Our initial findings suggest that RDM has the potential to deliver benefits through reductions in the regular conveyance of materials in the supply chain; stockpiling of materials; complexity in the treatment pathway; the need for skilled operators at the point-of-need; correction of errors through operator interference and staffing at the point-of-need.
