Abstract

This seminar will focus on the documentation and dissemination of creative arts research and knowledge exchange activities.

Initial scoping work by CDD Research Associate, Anna Farthing, has revealed that:
a) Some of the CDD schools’ existing activities could be regarded as ‘research’ according the HEFCE definition ‘a process of investigation, leading to new insights, effectively shared’. The element that prevents the activity being recognised as research is the “effective sharing” rather than the two earlier stages of the process.
b) Much of the CDD schools’ existing activity could be regarded as providing a conduit for two-way knowledge exchange between Higher Education and the professional creative and cultural sectors. Schools work regularly with professional tutors, and writers, directors and choreographers frequently make new work on students.
c) Some of this research and knowledge exchange activity delivers a beneficial economic and/or social impact. However, at present this is not being effectively captured or measured. It is a requirement that evidence of this impact is submitted in the next REF 2013/14 (Research Excellence Framework – an assessment exercise that dictates funding)

This seminar will explore how the CDD research and knowledge exchange activity can be more effectively documented and shared with the HE and research sector, in order to enable colleagues to gain recognition for their contributions in this area, in order to raise the profile of the CDD as a research organisation, and in order to attract potential future funding support.

The seminar will be led by Dr Charlotte Crofts, Senior Lecturer in Film Studies and Video Production, University of the West of England, Bristol and Dr Anna Birch, Lecturer in Research, Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Glasgow.
