Abstract
Overview
A blended and workbase approach to learning provides Nuclear Medicine Practitioners (NMPs) with an ideal opportunity to cement core skills and acquire the necessary experience that permits movement into developing areas of practice. The University of the West of England (UWE) has begun utilising a web-based image manipulation and processing platform (TeleHERMES™) within the nuclear medicine (NM) programme, facilitating a range of synchronous and asynchronous learning styles.
Methodology
Following initial scoping and stakeholder involvement with HERMES Medical Solutions and experienced NMPs, TeleHERMES™ software was installed at UWE in April 2009. The current student cohort was provided with access credentials, enabling remote login into the web-based platform. Additional e-learning resources (BlackBoard and video streamcasts) have been developed, further enhancing the completion of processing and manipulation case studies.
Results
Student feedback has been extremely positive and the NM programme team and HERMES Medical Solutions have created a custom educational version of the Gold 3 interface. Students particularly welcomed the web based approach, enabling access to example anonymised clinical cases and worksheets, which replicated the clinical environment.
Conclusion
The introduction of the TeleHERMES software has provided new opportunities in terms of further enhancing the students experience and development of core practitioner skills.
