Abstract

6,000-word,invited, illustrated article for ‘The Journal of Artists’ Books’ (JAB) published by Columbia College Chicago Center for Book and Paper Arts, Chicago, USA (http://journalofartistsbooks.org), JAB 31, March 23, 2012.

The article provides an overview of contemporary artists’ books activity in Australia, it introduces Australian and New Zealand artists’ books practice, curation and collection policies to a USA audience. The article surveys the current practice of c. 35 artists creating books in Australia and New Zealand from indigenous artists Jai Walker and Julie Gough to collectives (Book, Art, Object) and established artists working with traditional print: Peter Lyssiotis, Noel Sheridan, through to e-books, interviews with artists and curators in Brisbane and Melbourne, the operations of institutions collecting and exhibiting artists’ books, reviews and information on the contemporary practice of artists’ books, events, websites, galleries and exhibitions in the regions.

The Journal of Artists’ Books (est. 1994 by Brad Freeman) provides a platform for both theoretical and creative expression. As a forum for the study of artists’ books, JAB publishes critical and theoretical articles, reviews of artists' books and exhibitions, and commentary on conferences and other book art-related activities. JAB has its academic affiliation with Columbia College Chicago and its Center for Book and Paper Arts. That JAB archive of publications is held in the collection of Yale University.
